Review Fight or Flight by Samantha Young / Piatkus Books

Fight or Flight

by  Samantha Young

Synopsis: The universe is conspiring against Ava Breevort. As if flying back to Phoenix to bury a childhood friend wasn’t hell enough, a cloud of volcanic ash traveling from overseas delayed her flight back home to Boston. Her last ditch attempt to salvage the trip was thwarted by an arrogant Scotsman, Caleb Scott, who steals a first class seat out from under her. Then over the course of their journey home, their antagonism somehow lands them in bed for the steamiest layover Ava’s ever had. And that’s all it was–until Caleb shows up on her doorstep.

When pure chance pulls Ava back into Caleb’s orbit, he proposes they enjoy their physical connection while he’s stranded in Boston. Ava agrees, knowing her heart’s in no danger since a) she barely likes Caleb and b) his existence in her life is temporary. Not long thereafter Ava realizes she’s made a terrible error because as it turns out Caleb Scott isn’t quite so unlikeable after all. When his stay in Boston becomes permanent, Ava must decide whether to fight her feelings for him or give into them. But even if she does decide to risk her heart on Caleb, there is no guarantee her stubborn Scot will want to risk his heart on her….

Samantha never ceases to amaze me with her great writing skills and characters that I absolutely adore. However, sometimes the characters can be a bit too overboard and that hurt the book a bit, for me at least. Do not let this cover fool you into thinking that Sam Young wrote this cute and fluffy romance between two people that had an adorable meet cute and promptly fell in love. This is an elusion. Take my advice; don’t do that with any novel by Sam Young, but especially with Hero…and now Fight or Flight.

I ended up being pleasantly surprised at this book. Definitely in the beginning, Caleb will rub you the wrong way. He is totally rude to Ava and it just seems to be so harsh. However, we find out later in the story why he treated her the way he did. It wasn’t fair but I get it. I actually had tears in my eyes when I read why. Definitely heart breaking.

Ava and Caleb ‘meet’ in an airport where a series of run-ins leads them to a pretty strong case of insta-hate – mostly because Caleb is a rude, irritating asshole (even if he has a hot-AF Scottish accent). They irritate the crap out of each other, which is only exacerbated when they are seated next to each other on their flight. Stuck on a layover, their miserable day of traveling ends with them indulging in a steamy night together that is the best sex either of them have ever had.

Samantha Young is also remarkably talented at writing chemistry between her couples. Ava and Caleb might hate each other, but the tension and the gravitational pull they had on each other were sensual and so passionate. I could feel the heat through the pages of the books every time they had an encounter, even the non-sexual ones, and I could not get enough of it. The banter between them was an added bonus that made this book easy to devour. As I mentioned earlier, both Ava and Caleb had some serious trust issues, so they had obstacles to overcome throughout Fight or Flight. It wasn’t always pretty, unfortunately. As you can imagine, their no-strings-attached relationship became complicated when they grew feelings for each other.

We laughed, we cried, we swooned and we ached as Samantha Young’s words hit their target.
