Review Crescent City by Sarah J Maas

House of Earth and Blood

by Sarah J. Maas

Synopsis: Bryce Quinlan had the perfect life—working hard all day and partying all night—until a demon murdered her closest friends, leaving her bereft, wounded, and alone. When the accused is behind bars but the crimes start up again, Bryce finds herself at the heart of the investigation. She’ll do whatever it takes to avenge their deaths.

Hunt Athalar is a notorious Fallen angel, now enslaved to the Archangels he once attempted to overthrow. His brutal skills and incredible strength have been set to one purpose—to assassinate his boss’s enemies, no questions asked. But with a demon wreaking havoc in the city, he’s offered an irresistible deal: help Bryce find the murderer, and his freedom will be within reach.

As Bryce and Hunt dig deep into Crescent City’s underbelly, they discover a dark power that threatens everything and everyone they hold dear, and they find, in each other, a blazing passion—one that could set them both free, if they’d only let it.

With unforgettable characters, sizzling romance, and page-turning suspense, this richly inventive new fantasy series by #1 New York Times bestselling author Sarah J. Maas delves into the heartache of loss, the price of freedom—and the power of love.

Sarah J. Maas did it again! I have no words to describe the roller coaster of emotions this book was for me. If you know me, there is no secret that i am completely in love with Maas’s books, from Throne of Glass to A Court of Thornes and Roses, I loved them all. I know i don’t criticize her books that much, but honestly, I don’t even want to, because her books bring me a joy that i cannot put into words. Though, I have to be honest with you and say that House of Earth and Blood scared me at the begining. Since it has been a few years since i last read a first book in a series from Sarah, i had the impression that i was going to understand everything from the beginning, but i was so wrong to believe that. I was punched in the face by this new universe and it’s world building. There where so many new names and places and history and i felt overwhelmed by it. It was just the beginning and i believed i could never unsterstand it all, but with every page this new world unfolded and i started to understand how it worked. Let me say this, the world builiding is fantastic and this is just the beginning.

I started this book without reading the synopsis, hence why I was so shocked in the first 100 pages. I couldn’t believe Sarah killed these characters, that i’ve fallen in love with in just a few pages, but there i was, 50 pages in, crying like a baby. That was just the begining of my suffering. House of Earth and Blood has a considerable lenght, 800 pages are a lot and i have to say that half of the book was a little bit hard to get through, specially for those who are not familiar to Maas’s writing. I can’t say it bothered me, because to be honest with you, she can write about a carpet and i would still like it. From my experience with Sarah’s books i knew all those scenes and descriptions would make sense at some point, so i had patience and waited for some action. When i got that action i cried. And i cried even more. The second half had started to come together and my heart was pounding. The last 200 pages left me speechless. I am not exageratig when i say that i cried for three hours straight, while reading it. I was crying so hard my vision was blurry, but I kept reading and reading and suffering. The plot twists from this book were on a another level. My theories were all shattered and i was shocked by every little plot twist that i was not expecting. Therefore, the plot was fabulous and nobody can change my mind about that.

Let’s talk about the characters now! I was so wrong about Bryce. At the biging os the books she is portraied as this party girl that loves to get drunk every day and do drugs, when actually she is the most intelligent, genuine, passionate and thoughtful character ever. She would do anything for her friends and for the people she loves. Bryce Quinlan is a strong, leading female character and I would die for her!

Hunt Athalar is also a sweetheart and his love for Bryce is real, anyone who thinks otherwise can fight me! I think he is so different from Rhys and Rowan, but at the same time their love and respect for the women they love is very genuine and similar.

Honorable mentions: Ruhn(my favourite character, I want more his relationship with his sister), Danika(you played us baby, but we all adore you), Connor(i love you so much and you deserved better), Lehabah(I ADORE YOU AND YOU ARE THE BRAVEST)!!!

To sum it up, i am in shock and i want more and i can’t wait to see how Sarah J. Maas is going to destroy us.
